The summer of 2026 is showing that the “Nuclear Renaissance” is not just full of empty promises, but that it is increasingly becoming “intermittent” due to climate-change.

Meanwhile, her competitor is closing in fast, while putting on new, carbon-plated racing shoes with every lap she runs. She has not caught up to the leader yet, but the way things are going, it is only a matter of time.

This week, at the 30th United Nations climate change conference (COP30) in the Amazonian city of Belém, while the United States sulked at home, delegates from Thailand to Tanzania queued up to enter the Chinese pavilion, by far the largest in the conference hall. They weren't lining up for souvenir Chinese flags or pictures of President Xi. They were clamouring for something far more valuable: cheap Chinese solar panels that can give their citizens cheap and abundant electricity. The irony was lost on no one: the world's largest polluter has become the planet's decarbonisation dealer, and they did it by being better capitalists than the United States.

"Windmills are driving whales crazy", "they are not truly green", the current occupant of the White House has said at the beginning of the year as he was about to take office. Nearly a year later, amid record rises in retail electricity prices, it's the Trump administration's systematic attempts to undermine offshore wind development on the US East Coast that is driving people crazy. Especially the working-class Americans who are the most vulnerable to the affordability crisis that drove them to vote for the Republicans in the last election. Unfortunately for these workers struggling to make ends meet, the Trump administration is scoring an own goal by actively stymieing the development of US coast offshore wind, development which has the potential to mitigate the rapid rise of retail electricity prices in the North East.

The climate activists have it backwards. They want to overthrow capitalism to save the planet. The fossil fuel industry wants to preserve capitalism by denying the crisis exists. Both are wrong -- and their battle is destroying any chance of actually solving the problem.

Here's the heresy: Free markets can solve the climate crisis faster than any revolution. Not the rigged markets we have now, but actual free markets where polluters pay their costs.

Let me explain why this matters more than ever in 2025.

Ten years after the Paris Climate Accord promised to limit warming to 1.5°C, we've blown past that target. Global temperatures breached the limit in 2024. Floods, droughts, wildfires, and intensifying storms are no longer future predictions—they're today's headlines.
